About the ISD

The mission of the Institute for Sustainable Development is to improve knowledge and application of best practices in sustainability and to positively influence sustainable development policy through the development, implementation and support of dynamic educational programming, effective networking events, distinguished conferences and seminars and a small business certification.

 The Institute’s  university partners include

  • The Duke Center for International Development: Created over 20 years to focus on policy issues relating to international development, the Duke Center for International Development is housed in the Sanford Institute for Public Policy and offers a master of arts degree, executive education and short- and long-term consulting services.
  • The UNC Center for Global Initiatives, recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as one of only nine National Resources Centers for Global Studies, is focused on being a catalyst for the innovative work of UNC students and faculty.
  • The UNC School of Social Work works to expand knowledge regarding social problems and programs and provide leadership in the development of socially and economically just policies and programs that strengthen individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities.

ISD’s Chamber partners include

  • The Chapel Hill – Carrboro Chamber of Commerce: As one of the three “points” of The Research Triangle, Chapel Hill, along with Raleigh and Durham, continually receives accolades for being a top location to live and do business. Most recently the A & E channel recognized Chapel Hill as the #2 city in their “Top Ten Cities to Have it All” and Money magazine rated the town as the #1 “Best Place to Live in the South.”
  • The Durham Chamber of Commerce: The expansion of Durham’s economic base strongly correlates with the growth and development of the world-renowned Research Triangle Park, the largest and most successful planned research and development park in the country.  The 130+ firms there employ 40,000 workers, and more than 20 other industrial, office and research parks ring the perimeter of RTP.  Hundreds of other business opportunities have resulted from “spin-off” enterprises formed to supply or service the companies in the Park.  Other entrepreneurs have applied the knowledge and technology developed in the area to start their own companies.  The state’s biotechnology and microelectronics centers, also located in Durham County, enhance the supply of intellectual and technical assets and resources available to business.

Our business partners and foundation partners include

  • GlaxoSmithKline - which “aspires to be a sustainable company but recognises that it will take many years of hard work to develop and fully integrate design for sustainability principles into the business and to effect the necessary change in culture to move from aspiration to reality.  The initial focus will be to align environment, health and safety aspects of sustainability with the delivery of new products”.
